Are you hand-raising a young animal? Don't give it milk right away, but start with Rehydration Electrolyte Mix. Most motherless animals that have just been found are stressed, dehydrated, and/or hypothermic. In such a condition, the gastrointestinal system does not function optimally, and the animals cannot digest milk yet.
First, the body temperature needs to be brought to a normal level with a heat source. Also, the animal should be given some time to adjust to the new environment. However, such a little creature still needs fluids. You can give water alone, but it's even better with a bit of Rehydration.
Take one measuring scoop (10ml / 6g) of Rehydration and mix it with 100 ml of water. This creates an isotonic electrolyte solution that helps replenish salts and sugars in the body. Give the animal as much Rehydration as it wants to drink once per hour.
Experience in rescue centers has shown that animals receiving an electrolyte solution in the first 12 to 24 hours tend to fare better than those not given electrolytes at the start.
Only after this stabilization period, you can cautiously start with milk. Begin with 75% Rehydration and 25% prepared milk. Then, at the next feeding, use a mixture of 50% Rehydration and 50% milk, gradually reducing the Rehydration.
Pay close attention to the stool and urine. These are important indicators that show how the animal is doing.
Severely dehydrated animals may benefit from a subcutaneous infusion. Always consult a knowledgeable veterinarian or visit an animal rescue center near you for advice.
Rehydration is available at ColostrumShop.eu. However, you can also easily order it along with milk powder, nipples, and other necessities at www.melkvoordieren.nl.
